Kauai Chickens

The Kauai Chickens® brand started almost a decade ago right here on Kauai by local boy Donovan Claytor. The vision for the brand was first of all, it had to be cool (not your typical souvenir) and second, it had to always be designed and printed on Kauai.  And still to this day all apparel is printed and designed at our warehouse in Puhi. We are extremely grateful for all the local businesses and customers who continue to support us and buy our locally made brand! If you have any questions about Kauai Chickens® please contact Donovan at 808.245.7774 . Aloha.

    South Shore Sunset Spots

Kaua`i is known for the most spectacular sunset shows around. There are so many elements that enhance this one to two-hour beauty. The light reflects on the water, surfers create figurines, and birds bask in the sky of ever-changing hues. The most beautiful color palettes are exposed, making you want to swim in the sky and soak up all the magic. Mother Nature knows how to impress her guests on this island, and locals never tire of this incredible sight. You can watch the sunset from anywhere on the island for a new view, but no matter where you watch it from, they are different every single night as different weather circumstances influence their patterns. So much fun comes from the surprise and they are always a sight for sore eyes. We’ve gathered some of our favorite spots to watch the sunset on the South Shore and highly recommend visiting any or all of them!

    1. Poipu Beach Park – Set up a spot on the grass or the sand while watching the sun paint the peaceful waters as colors reflect and earth elements intermix one another. Picnic tables are available along the grass as well if you decide to have dinner with the show.

    2. Prince Kuhio Lawn (“PK’s”) / The Beach House Restaurant – This spot is always a winner. Surfers are catching waves, crystal clear water awaits for an optional golden hour snorkel, and Beach House restaurant has views front and center if you are interested in watching the sunset with a mai tai in hand…

    3. Ho`onani Road at ‘The Wall’ – As you drive down Ho`onani Road, there is a long wall along the coastline. It serves as a perfect bench to watch the sunset with friends. Bringing snacks and beverages make it a very beautiful, easy-going happy hour.

    4. . The Club at Kukui`ula Lawn and Lanai – As a Lodge Guest at Kukui`ula, you are able to experience all amenities within the Club at Kukui`ula. The expansive view from the lawn and outdoor patio showcases Spouting Horn and Kukui`ula Harbor beautifully. Check their website for available bookings.

    Kaua`i’s Famous Tree Tunnel

Quite possibly the most magical two minutes of your drive to the Southside, Kaua`i’s famous tree tunnel sends you on a euphoric journey during your last leg.

Sunlight flickers through the branches and leaves on the Maluhia Road’s three-mile long stretch of over 500 Eucalyptus trees as you cruise on through to Sunny Poipu!

A bit of history behind Kaua`i’s tree tunnel:

    • The original 500 trees were planted in 1911 as a gift to the community from Pineapple Baron Walter McBryde. They were leftover from a large landscape project of his estate home, which are now the grounds of the Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course in Kalaheo. McBryde was the co-founder of McBryde Sugar Company and also managed the Kaua`i Pineapple Company.
    • The tree tunnel marks the entrance to the island’s most appreciated tourist attraction – The Koloa Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail or the Holo Holo Koloa Scenic Byway is collectively represented by a series of places to stops that are of historical importance.
    • These historically important attractions depict the island’s rich history and geology such as the ancient places of worship, the early sugar plantation days, or natural wonders like the Spouting Horn and Kaua`i’s iconic beaches like Waiohai at Poipu, Shipwrecks, and Salt Ponds.
    • Eucalyptus trees are also sacred trees. The leaves have a purifying effect and negative energies disappear when Eucalyptus oils are exposed. The Eucalyptus spirit helps us strip away our fears in order to embrace the truth.
    • The word ‘Maluhia’ from the Maluhia Road, means ‘serenity’… The perfect terminology for this road, as it embodies the emotions you feel while driving it.
    • These big, beautiful trees have survived two hurricanes and continue to thrive creating a canopy of over 100 feet!

Kaua`i’s tree tunnel provides the most beautiful natural gateway to a slice of heaven – a trip of a lifetime, and the fairytale you’ve always dreamed of. What a welcome to Kaua`i’s south shore!

Queen Emma’s Cottage at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens

Emma Kalanikaumaka`amano Kaleleon`lani Na`ea Rooke of Hawaii (January 2, 1836 – April 25, 1885) was queen of Hawaii as the wife of King Kamehameha IV from 1856 to his death in 1863.

After the deaths of her son and husband Queen Emma came to Kauai to grieve. During her sojourn on Kauai beginning in December 1870 she resided at Mauna Kilohana, which was located within the 4,200-acre ahupuaa of Lawai. The humble cottage, was originally situated atop the bluff on the Koloa side of Lawai Valley, overlooking Lawai Bay. Emma planted hau, ti, banana, sugarcane, taro, and pia at Mauna Kilohana, as well as spider lilies, ferns, haole lehua, rose apple, kamani, mango, bamboo, hala, and the magenta bougainvillea that drape the pali to this day. She would often walk along the breathtaking bluff, as well as down into the Allerton Garden.

In the early 1900s, with sugarcane about to be planted at Mauna Kilohana, Alexander McBryde cut the house into sections, had it carefully lowered over the pali onto the valley floor, where it became known as Queen Emma’s Cottage. The cottage is now preserved as a part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. For tours of the beautiful Allerton Gardens visit; https://ntbg.org/gardens/allerton/

    Lawai International Center

This non-profit community project is located in an archaeological and culturally treasured valley that has long been recognized as a sanctuary of healing. The Lawai International Center represents one of the oldest Buddhist temple sites in the country and the only site existing outside of Japan. Volunteers tend to the shrines and valley as a center for compassion and cultural understanding. Visit http://www.lawaicenter.org/ for tours and hours of operation.

Kāneiolouma Heiau & Hawaiian Village Cultural Site

Kāhua O Kāneiolouma is a sacred cultural site containing remnants of an ancient Hawaiian village located at the corner of Poipu Road and Hoowili Road in Poipu. The 13 acre site contains archeological evidence of hale, fishponds, taro fields, irrigation systems, shines and a makahiki games arena.

The walled Heiau (temple) that once stood here was 130 feet by 90 feet; dedicated to Kane, a major god of Hawaii; Hulukoki, a bird god; and Ku-hai-moana and Ka-moho-alii, two shark gods. Three hala-lihilihi-ula trees situated on the outside of the naupaka hedge mark the heiau perimeter.
